The re-use, refurbishment and conversion of a Grade 2* Listed building situated in the heart of the business district, into apartments and commercial A3 units and offices.

Tower Buildings is located in the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City World Heritage Site, and is adjacent to the world renowned Liverpool Pier Head and the “Three Graces”. The building was designed by Aubrey Thomas in 1906, pre-dating his other work the Royal Liver Building by two years. Specialising in commercial buildings his work was characterised by notable inventiveness and stylistic variety as well as the use of the latest advances in building technology. Tower Building was one of the earliest steel framed buildings in the UK and employed large windows that admit generous daylighting to the office floors and self-cleaning white faience tiles above a ground floor storey of grey granite as an exterior cladding.

Working on behalf of a commercial developer we devised a scheme for the conversion of the building to a mixed use residential and commercial development providing 71 contemporary apartments in a combination of single, duplex and triplex units together with commercial A3 units and offices. This included gaining planning permission and listed building consent for a further floor of newbuild duplex accommodation at roof level and a decked seating terrace.
